This is the flag used by the Imperial Japanese Army Medical Corps from the 1870s until the adoption of the Red Cross flag of the Geneva Convention.

The flag was in use between May 27th 1872 and Jan 17th 1885 for the Army Medical
Corps on the battlefield and which appears in the recent movie "Last Samurai."
